1964 MERCEDES-BENZ 300SE COUPE (RHD)
A factory original, one-owner 300SE coupe with 20,759 miles from new
In the world of classic cars, a unicorn is a car so rare that it defies expectations of its very existence. This magnificent 1964 One-owner Mercedes-Benz 300SE Sunroof Coupe, in Right-hand drive, finished in stunning Silver Grey Metallic over its original red leather interior, and showing a mere 20,759 original miles, is one of only a handful still in existence today.
A true 1960’s statement, epitomising the very best engineering and style, the 300se coupe was launched one year after Mercedes introduced the 300se saloon. The W112 coupe has the internal code 112.021 – and this car is matching numbers throughout.
The M189 IV engine uniquely shares the same power plant as the famous W198 300SL Gullwing and world-renowned expert Bernd S. Koehling says that the engine needs to be revved to perform and this car is no exception.
The engine is sweet and performs exactly as it should and has been maintained to the highest standard throughout its life. The Bosch injector pumps have been totally overhauled, new air suspension bags fitted, and the level of care lavished on this car over 55 years of single ownership is very evident.
The car was first ordered by its owner back in 1963, taking delivery that same year. It was as a special-order manual (automatic being standard for the coupe), with factory sunroof, red leather and original Bundt alloys (which also accompany the car).
The air suspension makes the drive really comfortable, with no rattles and exudes presence. It benefits from a factory-optioned sunroof, which is a joy to operate.
The underside bears no evidence of restoration or rust. Looking around the panels, you will see wax oil coatings and other precautionary measures to prevent rust or corrosion – all steps taken by its owner.
I am told that the owner decided to change colour on the car on its 50th birthday, from DB-670 (Light Ivory) to DB-180 (Silver Grey Clear coat). The leather is entirely original and I am loathe to commission a re-trim.
The Chrome work is very solid with no pitting or corrosion, though slightly blemished in parts, as one would expect, . It's clearly been subject to a lot of polishing over the years.
Can this be the lowest ownership 300se coupe in existence? Almost certainly, in that the car is now 56 years old, being with the original owner for 55 of these well cherished years.
All original equipment comes with the car.

Overall this a spectacular car that epitomises the title unicorn. The car remains untouched by us, with the exception of new Mercedes tail lights (with amber) and one piece Mercedes hubs, which are just a personal preference.
